    Number Five: Story Time!

Hey, call me childish, but we all loved story time when we were kids, didn’t we? I remember my dad reading the Magic Faraway Tree one chapter at a time, while my sister and I sat on the edge of our seats, wondering if Moonface and the Saucepan Man would ever escape from the Land of Spells…

Anyway, I may have moved on from the Faraway Tree these days, but I still LOVE that feeling of snuggling up on the sofa, making myself comfortable, waiting for the story to begin…

I know, I know! Some of us NEVER grow up…

Hey! That reminds me of another story I know…

    Number Four: Two-Timing!

I have to say that, as a rule, I DON’T believe in two-timing… But we are talking about BOOKS here, okay? So, is that’s so wrong?

As an ex-librarian, who used to issue STACKS of books to each person for just 28 days, I know there must be LOTS of people who can read more than one book at a time… but, I hang my head in shame as I admit, I am NOT one of those people…

When we’re talking about the sheer mechanics of reading, I mean, ACTUALLY reading, I’m a one-book-at-a-time kind of girl, otherwise, my storylines get a bit MIXED-UP, if you know what I mean!

However, audiobooks must work on a different part of my brain or something, because I seem to be able to… well… TWO-TIME the book I’m reading with the book I’m listening to, without any strange mix-ups…

Just, please don’t tell the books…

    Number Three: Whenever, Wherever!

As I may have mentioned in a previous post, thanks to my less-than-perfect vision, I am the kind of girl who can’t read a book without some sort of heavy-duty reading light beaming down on me… but with audiobooks? Lighting REALLY doesn’t matter. You can do it day or night! Hey, you can even CLOSE YOUR EYES if you want to!

Admittedly, closing my eyes does bring with it its own challenges… You’ve guessed it! SNOOZEVILLE! But my solution? Don’t choose a boring audiobook and crank up the volume to the max… Problem solved!.

Number Two: From the Author’s Mouth…

Okay, I’m going to admit something now… I know this might make me sound a bit FUSSY, but, in my humble opinion, audiobooks are only as good as the person who reads them.

Hey, I mean, I’m not talking about those perfect actor-voices necessarily, but the voice has to go with the story, it has to FIT… And what voice fits a story better than any other? Of course, the one that comes from the mouth of the AUTHOR!

Here is a person who knows the story back-to-front, side-to-side and inside out… AND, most importantly, THEY WROTE IT, so they know EXACTLY what they meant and how they want the story to sound.

I have to say, I also feel a strange and wonderful connection with an author who has just been reading me their story for, I don’t know, maybe somewhere between 8 to 12 hours…

    Number One: Multi-tasking Magic!

And YES! Here we are again at the Number One spot in my countdown of the top five things I LOVE! (Yee-ha!)

This one gets the most votes because, for a girl who almost NEVER has enough time for reading, audiobooks don’t mind if I do the dusting, ironing or washing up while listening… Hey, I can even drive to the supermarket, do my shopping, even go for a 10k run, all the time enjoying the plot twists of my most recent crime thriller…

Problem is, if the story gets TOO exciting, my dusting/ironing/washing up/shopping/running, etc. may take a BIT longer than usual because, whatever I’m doing, I don’t want to stop…

Hmmm… is that what we call efficiency? Maybe not…

    Awesome books I have edited
No comments on The Woman in the Lakehouse by Juliette Trott

I have been lucky enough to edit many amazing psychological thrillers for author Juliette Trott. All have been gripping page-turners, but The Woman in the Lakehouse is my favorite so far!

From the first page, I felt an instant connection with Detective Cole Rivers, who is called to the lake house to investigate the death of a man pulled from Bellmere Lake.

Against his better judgement, the detective finds himself drawn to the grieving, yet enigmatic, widow, Evelyn Hart, and his strict professional boundaries are threatened as Evelyn becomes the chief suspect.

This is a fast-paced novel with all the intrigue, suspense and plot twists you would expect from this genre. My favourite thing about it, though, was not the thrills, but the tenuous, yet seemingly unavoidable effects of human attraction – even when it is inconvenient…

    My Interview with Juliette Trott…

What is your favourite thing about writing?

What I love most about writing is that it challenges my imagination. It forces me to ask “what if?” and follow those questions into places I didn’t expect. That sense of exploration—creating worlds, secrets, and possibilities—is what keeps writing exciting for me.

What is your least favourite thing?

My least favorite part of writing is the moment when self-doubt creeps in and makes you question the story. But I’ve learned that pushing through that uncertainty is often where the real breakthroughs happen.

Do you read your reviews? How do you handle feedback/criticism?

Yes, I do read my reviews. While it’s not always easy, I see feedback—both positive and critical—as an opportunity to learn and improve my writing. Every comment helps me better understand how readers experience my stories.

    Number Five: Money, Money, Money!

Hey, call me mean, but, as a girl who likes to count the pennies ALMOST as much as Ebenezer Scrooge, the first thing I LOVE about eBooks has got to be the price!!!

Apparently, the average price of an Amazon Kindle eBook ranges from $3.99 to $12.99, while the paperback alternative comes in somewhere between $9.99 and $19.99.

This, admittedly, means that the prices of books on Amazon vary massively… but bargain hunters like me are quite willing to give up that nostalgic ‘book smell’  if we end up with a few more bucks in our pockets at the end of the day…

    Coffee, anyone???

    Number Four: Save the Tree!

I promise you, I’m not just thinking about myself and where my next espresso is coming from… Noooooooo, I’m thinking about the mighty oak!

Actually, in the Land of the Long White Cloud, it’s the (slightly less majestic) pine tree that lays down its life for the sake of the humble paperback! So let’s pause for a moment and appreciate this noble tree…

So, my all-knowing amigo (Google) tells me that one single pine tree can produce approximately 2,000 to 3,000 paperback books… Not bad, eh? But how many of our spiny, piney friends go into making an eBook? Of course, ZERO!

So I guess that means there’ll be plenty left for Christmas…

Number Three: Heaps of Holiday Reads!

I’m not alone in this, right? As much as I LOVE reading (and I REALLY do), the only time I get to actually sit down and devour book after book is when I am away from my desk, my washing machine, my dishes, my Hoovering…

That’s right! I’m talking about sun, sand, sangria, swimwear! I’m talking about HOLIDAYS! But aeroplanes don’t have room in their holds for ALL THOSE BOOKS I have been waiting to read… So what is the solution???

    You’ve guessed it! eBooks!

By all accounts, a typical smartphone (and, I guess, mine’s pretty typical) can store thousands to TENS OF THOUSANDS of eBooks! So, even if I do NOTHING but read during my precious annual seven days in the sun, I’ll STILL never run out of those trashy novels I like to read when no one’s watching…

Number Two: Never Lose Your Place Again!

Seriously, as I think I have already mentioned, I LOVE reading! BUT (this is where I spill an EMBARRASSING secret) Even when I’m reaching the climax of the most GRIPPING thriller, I often find my head starts to nod, my eyelids start to close – and what happens then?

The gripping thriller SLIPS through my fingers, the pages fan out for the briefest of moments before resuming their most natural form – That of the CLOSED BOOK – and what happened to my precious, hand-crafted bookmark? Well, of course, it is cheekily resting beside my sleeping self, NOT marking the page that I will never even remember getting to anyway…

HOWEVER – and I guess, by now, you know where I’m going with this – when I’m enjoying the said thriller IN EBOOK FORM, does it matter if the Land of Nod beckons? No sirree!

Here’s the clever bit… An eBook automatically marks and remembers the last page you read, ensuring you return to EXACTLY the same spot… And, if that wasn’t enough, “Whispersync” technology is often used to sync this location across multiple devices…

    GENIUS!!!

    Number One: Super-Size It!

And YES! We’ve reached Number One in my countdown of the top five things I LOVE about eBooks! (Hoorah!)

This one gets my top spot because, for a girl who can only read in the daytime, or under some sort of high-octane, carefully angled reading light, the fact that eBooks have their own built-in illumination system works wonders for my less-than-perfect vision!

The special nighttime white-on-black no-glare option means that, if that juicy crime thriller is really starting to live up to its genre, I can read all night, and who would know?

And I ESPECIALLY love that thing where you can make the words bigger – SUPER-SIZED if you want to – so all that squinting at the page, and angling the book so the light hits it just so – these are things of the past. Yeeha! DIY large print puts an end to eyestrain!

Or, I suppose I could just get myself some reading glasses…
